Dave Austin, the founder of “Players of Faith”, recently spoke at the Cadence Associates dinner in Colorado Springs and shared his passion of growing up as a military brat. His dad Henry “Hammering Hank” Austin was a Chaplain in the Navy. Chaplain Austin served both in WWII and in the Korean War, where not only did he provide communion to Marines in foxholes and baptized many of them in the icy waters, but he also buried many soldiers there on the fields of battle and was present for the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.

Cadence Associates is excited to partner with Players of Faith to bring the hope of the Gospel and encouragement to the military community.

“Players of Faith” VISION

With one seed we can feed millions. Our mission is global. We not only supply financial support, but we use our platform to share our faith and demonstrate our dedication to serving others. We stand tall and are warriors of faith;

“Players of Faith” MISSION

”Players of Faith” is a non-profit organization that encourages athletes to stand up and lead others towards their faith. We contribute to programs that help athletes rise above their own wants and desires and help them to play for something more. With one seed we can feed millions…

WHO: Extraordinary athletes who don’t just play for themselves, but for a greater cause. Players who are grateful for what they have achieved and have attained, and players who want to use their unique skills to help “others” find a strength within their own faith, and by others we mean everyday people.

WHAT: A non-profit organization consisting of well-known athletes (and in some cases, musicians) who are combining their talents and resources to unite in strength and by combining efforts we can reach more and serve in a much larger way. Our players of faith are just the vehicles for spreading these positive and uplifting messages and the collective efforts can enhance the lives of our recipients in a much more diverse way than by going at it alone – a united and collective effort.

WHY: To create the opportunity to be part of the solution and not the problem – whether you are a star athlete or not, we are creating the building blocks for “champions to be champions.” Our primary focus is to address the low self-esteem that is the #1 problem facing today’s youth. By treating yourself with love and respect you can then treat others with the same, and this creates a domino effect that lifts you up and provides a different perspective from which to live your life.

HOW: Through the support and collaboration of professional and elite athletes, and the dedication and contacts of the executive board and advisory committee, a global network of media, social networking, and online presence is being established that will positively impact the lives of many, especially that of our youth, through the medium of high level sports and to millions of people around the world on a magnitude that has never been done to date.

“I went to minister to these people, but it turns out I was ministered to.”

In January, the Hospitality House Team from Asia met in Hawaii for a week retreat, to be refreshed, to relax, to focus on rejuvenation to start fresh when they returned to the field to serve military people. Janet greatly enjoyed serving as a Cadence Associate in this capacity. Below are her words about the experience.

How did you first hear about Cadence International and Cadence Associates?
I knew Mary Etta Reynolds [a Cadence missionary] and was involved with her in the past in hospitality and children’s ministry, but not in missionary work.

What was your service like from day-to-day at the retreat?
Well, a typical day included shopping for food and going to Costco. I prepared a continental breakfasts and sack lunches. Also, I prepared other meals. We met with the Asia team members at one of the larger homes that Cadence rented. I was involved in sharing and Bible Study.

Explain what you took away from being involved.
Being single again, being a widow, this was uncharted land, serving on my own. But it was an experience I’ll always remember. I went to minister, but it turns out I was ministered to! I was blessed more than I expected to be. You can never out-give the Lord. No matter how much you give, He always gives you more.

I was impressed with the team—how giving and serving they were. Two families were there with their kids and there were others who are my age and empty-nesters. I just love the ministry that they do, and by helping them get away and refresh, the servicemen and women they go back to win. It’s a win-win situation. I am looking forward to helping with another retreat in Denver in the near future. I realized that I need to be doing. I’m a people person I guess.

From your perspective, how can other people assist Cadence missionaries and ministries with their needs?
Prayer, I’m an advocate of being a prayer warrior. If you can’t get out to serve, if you’re house-bound or anything, you can pray.

Also, if God leads you in any way, any where, give it a try. Serve. It used to be, or at least to me, that if you were a missionary, you were a missionary for life. But now there’s so many short-term trips and ways to serve missionaries themselves. I never thought I could be a missionary, but I can be. It was such a great experience. If you do it once, for a day or for a week—just do it!

Being a Cadence Associate involves serving the missionaries and staff of Cadence International while also serving military people. Want to sign up? Sign up on the volunteer form to get started.
